Marching Percussion, Percussion Ensemble, and Steel Drum Band Coaching

James currently directs the ASC Grizzly Drum Line, The ASC Percussion Ensemble- Continuum, the ASC Steel Drum Band- The Rocky Mountain Pan Handlers, and the San Luis Valley Community Steel Drum Band.  He has coached over 25 marching percussion sections, percussion and mallet ensembles, and steel drum bands at the middle school, high school, and collegiate/university level.

Coachings address technique, ensemble playing, part preparation, musical considerations, and stage presence.

Frame Drumming Essentials

Learn the techniques, history, traditional rhythms, and improvisatory techniques to play a variety of frame drums.  Frames drums are available to clinic participants.

The Timpanist's Role

This clinic addresses technique considerations, mallet selection, tuning/intonation, stickings, dampening, part preparation, and more.

Orchestral Percussion Workshop

A clinic and/or master class in which tambourine, triangle, castanets, and crash cymbal techniques are presented.  These ever-important instruments require special techniques and precise musical execution.  The class is hands on, provides practice routines and repertoire for individual practice, and are crucial skills for the middle school, high school, and college/university percussionist.

Approaching, Developing, and Applying Four Mallet Technique.  Musser/Stevens, Burton, and Traditional grips are addressed through demonstration and hands-on activities.  Mallets can be provided for participants.

Taking the mystery out of chart reading.  Immediately improve chart reading in a variety of styles.  Topics include styles, form, figures, set-ups, fills, brushes, and materials.

Beginning Hand Drumming Techniques

Learn the techniques essential for good time, tone production, and creative expression.  Djembes can be provided for clinic participants.

Advanced Hand Drumming Techniques

Develop ensemble playing and improvisation skills through folkloric repertoire.  Djembes can be provided for clinic participants.
